The 2013 Estate "S.M.X." is a blend of 60% Syrah, with 20% each of Xinomavro and Merlot, aged for 12 months in new, light-toast French oak. Expressive, powerful and a bit sweet on the edge (the oak adds to that just now), this has plenty of concentration and flavor. What makes it special, though, is that it is well supported by acidity and its backbone. The herbal nuances, with a touch of rhubarb, give it a bit of complexity, too. It evolves well, becoming more expressive. Then, there is a big finish, tight, crisp and cool. Give it a couple of years in the cellar. This is too undeveloped just now, but it looks to be in the running for Alpha’s best S.M.X. yet. I feel compelled to lean up just now. By Robert Parker.com, Aug 2016.
