Although Le Difese may do the work of the estate's "everyday" wine, when the estate in question is Tenuta San Guido, the “everyday” wine is still a reason to celebrate. Ironically, the Le Difese, a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with one-third Sangiovese, is even more difficult than Sassicaia to obtain, for the estate produces very little and exports even less—most of it goes to local Bolgheri restaurants. Don’t let the value price point fool you: this is a Super Tuscan of the first order and a fabulous food-friendly wine. Blueberries, fresh-cut flowers, grilled herbs and a touch of coffee whirl in this wine’s kaleidoscopic palate that’s made even more thrilling by the wine’s shiny acidity and sinuous tannins. (70% Cabernet Sauvignon & 30% Sangiovese)
Bright red. Scented nose combines spicy cassis, red cherry and tobacco. Wonderfully creamy and layered in the mouth, with very good sweetness and charm to its red fruit and herbal flavors; ripe but not roasted. The persistent finish shows even tannins and a complicating note of violet. Beautifully made entry-level wine: a little more concentration and I would have scored it even higher.
